Understanding Previews

At pretty much every comic book shop across the U.S. and perhaps the world, the monthly Previews catelogue can be found. And it is one of the most important, and fantastic resources for anyone who regularly buys comic books and comic book related stuff. When I first started hanging out regularly at my local comics shop, many others would browse the catelogue, but initially it was something I simply saw other people use. Now, I … Read entire article »

Review of Superman #714

Well, I picked up Superman #714 the final issue of the Straczynski’s Ground series and it ended surprisingly really well. The issue is quite dense in so far as packing a lot in one issue, but not so dense that it hinders a good flow of the story. And it ended in a way that I was completely not expecting. Honestly, I really thought that with this issue, that Superman would hang up his suit for … Read entire article »

Great Power Girl Moments #3 — Power Girl #21, p.1

This is such great Power Girl Moment from issue #21. It’s actually the very first page and it’s just one of my all time favorite series of panels. This series of frames preceeds some story telling about her getting in a fight with Superman, but that she was actually hallucinating and beating up Captain Atom. She was hallucinating due … Read entire article »

Review of Superman #713

Well, the “Grounded” Superman series continues with last week’s release of #713. This edition definitely left one with the sense that this story could end up going any number of ways in next month’s final issue of the series. Will Superman give up being Superman, or will he continue!? This edition opens with a scene in which Supergirl and Superboy show up, invited by Superman, to have a chat with him wherein he tells them that … Read entire article »
Action vs. Character Development in the New 52
May 1st, 2012 | Comments Off on Action vs. Character Development in the New 52
One of the things standing out greatly to me in the New 52 titles I have followed, and in comics generally, is the interesting approach of either having tons of superficial battle scenes or a race to save the day, OR some really interesting character development. Strangely, Straczynski’s Superman Grounded series is what really got me first started reading comic books in a serious way due to it’s vivid and far-reaching character exploration. On the weekends, … Read entire article »
